We have crossed the fall equinox point and started a new cycle. The day and night were equally long last Saturday and since than darkness is slowly taking over. Oh yes, we are turning inside. Nature is getting ready to shift.
New York is still very sunny and warm, but you can not lie to yourself. Summer is gone. You can not ignore that smell in the air, yellow leaves, yellow-orange sun, bloody sunsets at 7 pm. Autumn is coming. Trees are dropping leaves and getting ready to pull all their juices deep inside and save them for the winter. The direction of the energy is getting more inward. Things are slowing down.
Sun has entered into the sing of Libra (09/24) and now is at the furthest (opposite) point from ascendant, from 1st house, and from Aries (in basis zodiac setup when Aries is the beginning of the 1 house). Aries is cardinal fire. Libra is cardinal air, so we are on the cardinal axis again (the last one was in June when the Sun was in Cancer, opposing Capricorn- the longest day and shortest night in the year). Again, the polarity point is telling us so much about the main sign. We can learn so much about Libra by studying Aries. Aries is self-centered, Libra is other-centered. Aries is instinctual, Libra is socialized. Aires says: Just do it!. Libra says: let me think about it. Aires says: keep it simple. Libra says: it’s complicated.
Libra is between Virgo and Scorpio. For thousands of years, there was a historical “dispute” whether one part of the star constellation is actually balance pans of the scale (Libra) or it is the claws of Scorpio. It is very symbolic. You might think that whenever you are dealing with a Libra person, you are in a totally safe zone of Venus-ruled energy that is all about harmony and balance. And in a way it is, but there are claws there as well:)
In Hellenistic Greece, Libra constellation was called: Zygos which means the yoke (or shackle). The yoke was a wooden part that was keeping two Oxes next to each other. It was something that was making two (Oxes) working as one. The Oxes were trained from birth to walking on the left or right side, but the yoke (Zygos) was what was keeping them together.
Enough of stories:) But I think they are cool and they are telling us something important because they operate on the “myth” level which is connected to the archetypal understanding from which all the qualities stems.
After all the Virgo self-criticism, corrections, humble work, service, self-perfecting, we are ready to face the other person as equal. In order to do that Libra is entering an emotional reality of Other. That gives them amazing insight into other people’s emotions, a great understanding of another person’s situation, making them very compassionate. But the tricky part is that in this reality of other Libra loses contact with itself. Libra’s attention is so focused on the interpersonal environment and she/he doesn’t know anymore what does he/she wants. “Me” is becoming just another “other”. Libra is connecting personal situation with the “bigger picture”, that is why all the decisions are serious. That explains why Libras has often a huge problem with making decisions and choices. When you’ll ask Libra what food he or she wants to order, very often the answer will be: “you decide”.
Libra’s mind can produce the same amount of arguments pro and against something. People driven by this energy can understand another person so well that they can have a problem with taking a side in the conflict. They understand both sides, which makes them perfect negotiators, politicians, and diplomats.
The cardinal energy of Aries will make him/her say: I will just do it right now, with the help of other people or without. Libra works very differently. Very rarely Libra do things with its own hands (of course symbolically). Libra’s way is to create/ facilitate space and through amazing awareness of forces, energies, and power at play inside this space, Libra is shaping the outcome of events through interpersonal skills and actions. That is exactly what politics is. That potentially makes Libra’s prone to be manipulative type (the claws).
When Aries wants something to happen, he or she will make it happened through direct actions. Aries will go there in person and will make it happened, will get what he/ she wants.
Libra will host a gathering/ meeting or party and invite the best experts that are not necessarily all in good relations which each other. The goal will be achieved collectively in the atmosphere of good manners and politeness, with mutual respect and fair agreements between all the parties. Eating good food in a beautiful interior, cause Libra is ruled by Venus. Love and harmony are the core values of Libras. They naturally take a position that brings balance, symmetry, and stillness.
Libra is often a type that needs another person to balance him or herself. And so she/he can create a counterbalance to another person. Libra (me and you) is a polarity of Aries (me), but Libra has a polarity in itself already. Aries is asking “how can I be connected to myself?”, Libra: “how can I be connected to others?”. The trick is that you can not be connected to others when you’re not connected with yourself. That would literally throw you out of balance:).
So Libras! Guide us into a process of finding a balance between “ME” and “YOU” internally, externally and ultimately, which is basic and primary in a world of duality and polarities, which we are living in. That is how I understand the “Cardinality” of Libra. Such a powerful lesson to embrace there.
