Mercury, the ruler of Virgo has always something to do with our close environment. Virgo controls this environment through intellectual functions (rationality, logic). This is the mind that gathers and organizes information into categories, so things are clear and understood.
As an earth element sign, Virgo is rooted in physical reality and influences it through actions that bring clarity – cleaning, organizing. Clean and organized space is functional (Virgo word). It can serve its purpose (another Virgo word). Virgos have the reputation of people who obsessively clean and organizes everything.
Wojciech Jóżwiak (Polish astrologer, author, and editor of Taraka) describes Virgo’s approach to cleaning as a bringing the hard edges of the physical reality back to the clear view. This is where horizontal space (floor) ends and the vertical wall begins. And the dirt in the corners of the room as something that blurs that image and impacts the functionality of the space.
Each zodiac archetype has its own mode of perception. For example, Aquarius pays attention to what is original and different. Libra is constantly trying to figure out what other people want and need. Virgo is looking at what is not in order, what is out of alignment, and what needs to be corrected, brought back to its place in the world.
Strong Uranus or Jupiter can give a vision, possibly a big vision, great ideas, inspiration, but often a strong focus on the goal with bypassing the steps in between the vision and its realization. This is where Virgo comes in.
All earth signs are great in bringing a vision into a reality. Virgo is definitely the most detailed oriented earth sign. They create a “step by step” plan of bringing an idea or vision into physical manifestation. Virgo knows what needs to be done so this can happen. The flip side of this is Virgo’s tendency to get stuck or lost in a world of details, small things, and losing the connection with the final product, the goal, main purpose.
One of my favorite way of looking at zodiac signs is through their polarity point (opposition). This brings a balance and fullness to our perception (each opposition has full Moon energy). The opposite sign to Virgo is Pisces, in which the main problem is lack of distinction or borders between themselves and other people (especially their emotions). Pisces is one with everything and everybody. They rely on their feelings, visions, and intuitions.
Virgo – Pisces axis represents a dynamic between the rational vs transnational mind. Feelings and visions vs logic. Distinction and discrimination vs including and non-separation.
When we take our starting point, the zero-point of the whole zodiac (Aires) and we will draw a line to Virgo, the aspect we will get will be quincunx (150 degrees). This aspect describes an internal relationship between self-confidence, willfulness, and actions that follow one’s vision (that’s the Aires part) and self-criticism and looking at what might potentially go wrong. These are the parts that require balance. We need both of them. Aries’s willfulness without any counterbalance can turn into violent imposing of one’s will. Virgo’s criticism without Aries’s confidence can easily turn into self-doubt.
6th house (house of Virgo) is a house of health and service. More about the 6th house another time. When I look into Virgo’s soul I see very sincere people who came here to learn new things and be in service. If you have a problem with organizing your business, your apartment, or your thoughts, Virgos are the best in organizing any kind of a mess. Some people say that Virgo comes after Leo because someone has to clean after the party. I see a willingness to do the hard work together with humbleness and that is a very powerful combination that can lead to success everywhere at all times.
Stay tuned,
Mateo
